P.E.
Our approach to teaching physical education
Pupils are given opportunities through physical education (P.E.), to develop important qualities and skills that can be used in all aspects of life; teamwork, patience, leadership, and self-discipline. Exercise is also key to our health and wellbeing. Our approach to P.E. is to deliver a creative and engaging curriculum, which introduces pupils to new and exciting sporting challenges.
Early Year Foundation Stage PE
The younger years are where pupils first have the opportunity to develop key personal values in the context of fun and meaningful sport. From their beginning of their time in school, children run, jump and skip around without any prompt whatsoever. PE at the early stages involves harnessing those common movements, and developing these into new movements and fine and gross motor skills, to start them on their journey to being life long athletes.
PE in Key Stage 1
Pupils in KS1 develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident. They are given a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. Pupils learn to be able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
PE in Key Stage 2
Pupils continue to apply and develop a broad range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. Pupils learn to develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
Our core aim for all pupils
We aim to get all pupils active through our P.E. curriculum and give them the opportunity to grow to love and appreciate the long-term positive effects that sport can have on our lives, whether it be competitive sport at an elite level, being active and having fun with friends, or personal fitness and wellbeing goals. The wide range of activities we deliver gives our pupils a broad sporting experience and inspires them to take on personal challenges. We want all our pupils to discover a new sport they enjoy and feel comfortable playing, whether that be a team or individual one. P.E. lessons are taught to deepen their understanding of basic skills, and immerse them in an active lifestyle. For pupils who are keen to pursue competitive sports experiences, we also offer a number of options throughout the year.
