Promoting Fundamental British Values
Academies have a statutory duty to actively promote British values Education (Independent School Standards) Regulations 2014. There are five British values: democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance. As an academy we work to ensure that young people are prepared for life in modern Britain by:
ensuring that we have a clear strategy for embedding fundamental British values, and evidencing how we do this
challenging opinions or behaviours in schools that are contrary to fundamental British values
enabling students to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence
enabling students to distinguish between right and wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law in England
encouraging students to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative, and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely
enabling students to acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England
encouraging respect for other people
encouraging respect for democracy and support participation in the democratic process, including respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied in England.
We demonstrate that it is right to be respectful and tolerant of other beliefs and views, and of other faiths, races and cultures. We teach our pupils to identify and combat discrimination. We also teach our pupils that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.
